Mid-July 2023 Knitapestry Newsletter

Mid-July, 2023

Dear Nancy,

Hi all-

It's high summer, and many of you are reading this from a beach chair. Hope you'll come back, refreshed and ready for your cool-weather projects. To that end, we're getting in both summer- and winter-ready projects for knitting and crochet, like beautiful raffia for bags and hats, as well as new wool for those projects you found while on vacation.

While on the subject of new sweaters, Gemma will start her latest class on the Elah sweater on August 5th-details below.  There will be great tutorials, and the class will be offered as a hybrid (both on Zoom and in-person).

Clayton Leadbetter hosting his ongoing crochet workshop, and we're adding another crochet session with MaryAnn Gebhardt.

The next knit night will be Wednesday, July 19th from 7-9PM in-store.

Knit the Elah Cardigan with Gemma, Four Saturday mornings beginning August 5th at 9AM.
Join Gemma as she explores construction of a top-down, worsted-weight sweater which has an uncomplicated lace pattern on the front panels. Isabel Kramer is known for well-written patterns that are modern and flattering. The description from Ravelry:
Elah is worked seamlessly from the top down. Fronts are worked in lace pattern, while the back is worked in Stockinette stitch. Knitting starts with the provisional cast on of the shoulders for the fronts (you will first work the right front, then the left front). Once the short row shaped shoulder slope is done, the front is worked flat to underarm. Shoulder stitches are picked up from the provisional Cast On of both front shoulders to work the back to the same length. At underarm both fronts and back are joined to work the body top down back and forth to the bottom hem. As the front ribbing is built in, there is no finishing required. Sleeve stitches are picked up around the arm openings to work the sleeves in Stockinette stitch top down in rounds to the cuffs."
The hybrid class will meet August 5th, 12th and September 9th and 23rd. $60 for Zoom, $70 for in-person will include the pattern and, of course, Gemma's video tutorials specific to this project.
Crochet Medallions, Mandalas and Motifs with Mary Ann Gebhardt-4 Monday evenings at 6PM for $80.  10% off for supplies purchased in-store. For crocheters with some experience.

Mary Ann will teach you to construct and join different shapes to crochet unique projects-and designed by you!  You'll learn increasing, working around a block/medallion as well as joining them together.  Reading a crochet pattern will be reviewed. You'll need to know how to make a slip knot, how to chain and do a double crochet. Classes will be held August 14th and 28th and September 18th and October 9th.
We're going to participate in Marie Greene's annual 4-day Knitalong!

Marie Green (Olive Knits) has hosted a "4-day" knitalong over the 4th of July weekend for years, to rave reviews. This year's starts with the pattern teaser,  released last week. The knitalong will take place over the month of July (NOT REALLY 4 days). We'll meet in-store and on Zoom (hybrid) on Saturday, July 1st, 9-10 AM and Thursdays at 7-8PM on July  20th and August 3rd.
Crochet Workshop with Clayton Leadbetter-Monday mornings from 9-10:30 AM. 10% discount for supplies purchased in-store for his workshop.

We're excited to share: Clayton is going to offer his Crochet Workshop at Knitapestry! If you have experience with crochet, join him to learn new techniques as well as get guidance.  You'll need to buy a "book" of 4 90-minute sessions for $80; since the classes don't have to be taken in consecutive weeks, you must let Clayton know you're coming. We ask that you use those prepaid sessions within six months, though. Buy your sessions through the shop. It'll be available online soon as well. And we recommend a private lesson if you're a beginner: call the shop to set one up.

My First Sweater with Anna
4-class sessions, Thursdays, also after the store closes at 4PM. Take your four classes when convenient! $65 per series. You'll get a 10% discount on all supplies purchased for the class.

These basic project classes are designed to help you to finally tackle a sweater!  Find that simple pattern you've always wanted to try. There's a lot of knitting in a sweater, but a lot of reward, too. Work on the basics of gauge, pattern/yarn selection, deciphering a pattern.  These techniques should be in your toolbox and none of them is particularly hard.  Each knitter will choose their own sweater project and get the help they need.  So if you've been unsatisfied with your previous attempts, or really have never done a project like this before, join in! You must call in advance.
Next Steps Knitting with Gemma Sogabe

Punch Card Hour is now on GroupSpot!

You can join Charmaine's PCH Group on GroupSpot by clicking this link.

Sessions occur when the store is closed and follow the COVID policies of the store.  You can purchase a 5 or 10 punch card (get your 11th punch free) or simply drop in for $10.  No RSVP needed.  Feel free to contact Charmaine directly here, with any further questions.
Knit the Rainbow is a charity dedicated to helping at-risk LGBTQ youth. We'll be a drop-off location for garments for this group. (And no, items don't have to be rainbow-colored!)

"Knit the Rainbow (KtR) was founded in April, 2020 after the Founder, Austin Rivers, discovered the housing disparities facing LGBTQ+ youth in New York City. Austin learned there were a few nonprofits dedicated to providing housing and/or shelter for this community; however, he knew there was still more to be done; this is where KtR was born.

Austin learned to knit while performing on a tour in Japan and felt he could use these skills to provide warm protective winter garments for LGBTQ+ youth facing homelessness. KtR hopes to educate people across the country about the housing crisis these youth are facing and increase the number of youth served by asking volunteers to knit or crochet at home and donate the garments to KtR to be distributed in New York City and Chicago.

KtR has big plans for the future. We hope to not only these cities, but to eventually provide winter protective garments to homeless LGBTQ+ youth across the country. In addition, we plan to partner with other nonprofits who provide shelter and housing to these youth and offer knit/crochet classes for their residents so they too can knit garments for themselves and the rest of the community facing this housing crisis."

Yarn Donations for Ridgecrest Senior Housing:
Help local residents make hats and clothing for a variety of charities. These knitters are motivated and prolific...we're happy to play our small part!  We'll take your CLEAN yarn and bring it to the senior center, where residents will work on their projects.  Your destash is ultimately comfort for a person in need, and there's the added piece where these knitters connect and are engaged not only with each other, but with the community. Please: no needle donations.
